Yo La Tengo has bordered between pop-sentimentalism and lo-fi experimentation for many years. The similarities to Sonic Youth's sound are still present on I Can Hear the Heart Beating As One, but Tengo has truly progressed beyond most categorization. Longtime fans can breathe sighs of relief - this album does not stray far from Yo La Tengo's recent works. But it does mix the slower tracks with more distorted ones, producing a choppy feel.

The improved production seems to smooth over the rough edges on tracks such as "Shadows." This beautiful ballad reminds listeners why Yo La Tengo is so liked in indie rock circles. At the same time, tracks such as "Sugarcube" lend a taste of pop to fuzzed guitars that strangle the listener. "Autumn Sweater's" drum-based opening and organs create the most easy-to-listen-to track on the album and captures a feel that screams Yo La Tengo.
