Progeny of a musical family, Jon Brion has evolved into one of the most versatile pop musicians of his time, highly accomplished as a player, a producer, an arranger, a band member, a conductor, and the "house band" at Hollywood's Largo club on Friday nights. Brion is probably best-known for his production work and co-writing credits on albums by the likes of Aimee Mann, Fiona Apple, Rufus Wainwright, the Eels, and more.

But his work as a band member (the Grays) and as a solo artist comes equally well recommended.

RiYL: Grays, Aimee Mann
If "Magnolia" director Paul Thomas Anderson had his way, ex-Gray Jon Brion and cohort Aimee Mann would be the two hottest names in the business. After fawning over Mann's work on the "Magnolia" soundtrack (which was nominated for an Oscar), Anderson professes in the liner notes to the movie's score that Brion is a musical genius, "the only person on the planet capable of the requests I made musically for the film."

While this may be going a bit overboard, Brion certainly turns in an impressive effort in composing, arranging and directing this orchestral set. As a man best known for his work in the pop world, Brion shows he can ply his skills in other forums.
