‘Propeller’ Contest (Updated!)
As Western Homes noted recently, NATN has some interesting gaps in her archives. I guess that’s reasonable since no one who works for this site gets paid. But still, I was shocked to learn that we don’t have a review of Guided by Voices‘ Propeller. For goodness sake, we have 26 GBV-related reviews, but not one of them is on Propeller?
In recognition of this sorry fact and in honor of the album’s recent re-issue by Scat Records, we are hosting our first ever review-writing contest. Submissions are due by Friday, Nov. 18. The winner will be announced on Monday, Nov. 21 and have his/her review eternally stored in NATN’s archive. Also, thanks to the good folks at Scat, the winner will recieve a copy of both of the vinyl re-issues. One Runner-up will get a free CD copy of the re-issue. Here are the submission guidelines. Follow them, or face elimination!
NATN’s ‘Propeller’ Review Contest
- Reviews must be submitted by 3 pm EST on Friday, Nov. 18.
- Email submissions to Benfrench@aol.com
- There are no length requirements - go as long or as short as you want.
- Please post questions to the message board below, I will answer them here for all to view.
Good luck!
Update: We’ve stopped taking submissions for the Propeller contest. Thanks to the folks who submitted. The winner and runner-up will be announced on Monday. Until then, you can particpate in this second Propeller-related contest, proposed by one of our entrants. Joshua Harris writes:
A much more interesting contest would be to compare peoples versions of the lyrics to “Particular Damaged.” Here are mine:
Drafted for the troops
We are the earthling providence
I mean in the street a sensation of flug
It’s all agog it’s all agog
Sift through the traffic and capture a tactic
I’m pretty sweet by the Mexican Shopper
Gotta keep copyin’
it’s a God Riskin’ us With God Riskin’ us
down as we move move — move move move
In to the street for the Mexican shopper
Gotta keep a copper
it’s a God Riskin’ us With God Riskin’ us

I propose that extra credit be given for describing “Quality of Armor” as “the moment when their genius became manifest.”
